Magnetic isotope effect in the reaction of disproportionation of radical pairs

چکیده

The photolysis of methyldeoxybenzoin was carried out in aqueous SDS solution in the earth’s field and in a field of 1500 G. Benzaldehyde and styrene are produced by disproportionation of benzoyl-set-phenethyl geminate radical pair. Both benzaldehyde and the recovered methyldeoxybenzoin are enriched in “C. These results represent the first direct evident that both disproportionation and recombination of a radical pair are identically selective to the magnetic isotope effect, a result consistent with the conclusion that the reaction pathways which involve a triplet geminate radical pair are selected after the completion of intersystem crossing.

Recent advances in spin chemistry*

The great success in controlling chemical reactivity by spin manipulation was achieved in the last decade, and many remarkable spin and magnetic phenomena have been discovered. Among those discoveries, the most chemically important highlights are magnetic isotope effect, spin catalysis, and single-spin tunneling spectroscopy. This paper summarizes recent advances in these new and hot areas of m...

Are biochemical reactions affected by weak magnetic fields?

T he scientific literature is replete with studies of the influence of weak magnetic fields on biological systems. Often motivated by alleged health hazards of the stray electromagnetic fields that accompany the distribution and use of electrical power, the majority of these articles report definite effects. However, in the relatively few cases in which independent replication has been attempte...

Viscosity and temperature dependence of the magnetic isotope effect

The 13C enrichment observed in the first order photolytic decomposition of dibenzylketone (1,3-diphenyl2-propanone) was studied as a function of solvent viscosity and temperature. The isotope effect is due to electron-nuclear hyperfine interactions in the free radical intermediates of the reaction. The results are explained using a continuum diffusion model and a simplified version of the radic...

Quantum Zeno Effect in Radical-Ion-Pair Recombination Reactions

Radical-ion pairs are ubiquitous in a wide range of biochemical reactions, ranging from photosynthesis to magnetic sensitive chemical reactions underlying avian magnetic navigation. We here show that the charge recombination of a radical-ion-pair is a continuous quantum measurement process that interrogates the spin state of the pair. This naturally leads to the appearance of the quantum Zeno e...

A Novel Initiator of [5-(benzyloxy)-4-oxo-4H-pyran-2-yl]methyl-2-bromo-2-methylpropanoateas in Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of Styrene and Methyl Methacrylate

A novel nano-initiator containing kojic acid moiety, [5-(benzyloxy)-4-oxo-4H-pyran-2-yl)methyl-2-bromo-2-methylpropanoate was synthesized by the reaction of 5-(benzyloxy)-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4H-pyran-4-one with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide in triethylamine and used as initiator in the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene and methyl methacrylate in the presence of Cu(0)/CuCl2and N,N...
